Shipping Premium Cars by Container, Safely

A premium exporterβs perspective from Seoul, written for buyers who care about the details. For a premium car, how it ships matters as much as what ships. Here is why we choose containers, how we brace and insure each unit, and what we document.
How a Car Travels Matters
For an ordinary vehicle, shipping is a formality. For a low-mileage premium car, it is part of the product. A Genesis or Grandeur that arrives with a kerbed wheel, a scuffed bumper, or salt-streaked paint is no longer the car the client approved, and no apology repairs the impression. That is why we treat the voyage with the same care as sourcing. Our default is container shipping rather than roll-on roll-off, and every premium unit is braced, protected, and photographed before the doors are sealed in Seoul. The few extra costs of doing this properly are trivial against the value of the car inside.
Why Container Over RoRo
Roll-on roll-off is cheaper and faster, but it exposes a car to risks we are unwilling to accept for premium units. On a RoRo vessel cars are driven aboard by port crews, parked close together, and left accessible throughout the voyage β which invites door dings, missing trim, and the occasional disappeared item. A sealed container removes all of that. The car is loaded once, by people we direct, and is not touched again until it reaches the consignee. For a sedan or SUV whose appeal rests on flawless presentation, the enclosed, untouched journey of a container is simply the right tool, and our clients consistently agree.
Bracing and Securing the Car
Inside the container the car must not move, and securing it correctly is a craft. We chock the wheels and use wheel straps or over-tyre lashings rather than hooking chains to suspension components, which can bend control arms or damage finishes. The handbrake is set, the battery handled appropriately, and fluids checked. Where two units share a container we maintain clearance and pad any contact points. Soft covers protect paint from rub, and loose interior items are removed. Done well, the car arrives sitting exactly as it was loaded β no shifted weight, no strap marks, no stress on the chassis from an improvised tie-down.
Weatherproofing and Cleanliness
Sea air is corrosive, and a long voyage can leave an unprotected car looking tired on arrival. We clean and dry each unit before loading so no moisture is sealed in, and we protect vulnerable surfaces. The sealed container itself does most of the work, keeping salt spray and rain off the bodywork that a RoRo deck would not. For premium cars destined for hot Gulf ports, this matters: the first impression at Jebel Ali or Aqaba should be of a car that looks as it did in Seoul. Presentation on arrival is part of what the client is paying for, so we do not cut it short.
Insurance and Documentation
Marine insurance is non-negotiable on a premium shipment. We arrange appropriate marine cover so the declared value is protected against the genuine, if rare, hazards of sea transport. Just as important is documentation: before the doors close we take a full photo set of every panel, wheel, and interior surface, plus the loading and bracing itself. This record establishes the exact condition at departure, which protects the client and makes any claim straightforward rather than contested. Paperwork β title, bill of lading, and export documents β is prepared in parallel so the car clears cleanly at destination without avoidable delay or storage charges.
What Arrival Looks Like
Because freight is quoted separately from the FOB car price, clients always know what the voyage costs and what it buys. We share the booking, the photographic dossier, and tracking so the car can be followed from our Seoul yard to its destination port. On arrival the consignee opens a container holding the same car they approved, braced and unmarked, with documentation that matches. That predictability is the entire point of shipping premium cars in containers. It costs a little more than RoRo, and for the units we handle it is worth every won β the car is the asset, and we deliver it intact.
